Coming Up in Port A
Full calendar →Getting Oriented
Port Aransas sits on the northern tip of Mustang Island, a barrier island on the Texas Gulf Coast. The town center is near the harbor and ferry landing — most restaurants, shops, and bars are within a few walkable blocks of each other. The Gulf beach runs along the east side of the island.
- •The free TxDOT ferry runs 24/7 from Aransas Pass — about a 5-minute crossing
- •The beach is a public road — vehicles allowed with a Beach Parking Permit, 15 mph limit
- •Golf carts are a common way to get around town
- •Grocery and supply options are limited — Lowe's on S. Alister is the main grocery
How to Get There
Drive via JFK Causeway
From Corpus Christi, take Highway 361 across the JFK Causeway south onto Mustang Island, then north into Port Aransas. About 30–40 minutes from Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP) depending on traffic.
Free Ferry from Aransas Pass
The TxDOT ferry runs 24/7 from Aransas Pass to Port A — a free 5-minute crossing. Ideal coming from the north. Wait times can be long on summer weekends; check the line before you commit.
Fly into Mustang Beach Airport (KRAS)
Private pilots can fly directly to the island. Mustang Beach Airport is a general aviation airport in Port Aransas — no mainland drive required.

Explore the guideWhen to Visit
Migration & SandFest
Best birding of the year. Texas SandFest in late April. Comfortable temps, water still cool but warming. Spring break weekends are busy.
Peak season
Warm Gulf water, longest days, biggest crowds. Book lodging early. Tarpon are running offshore. Afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Locals' favorite
Smaller crowds, warm water through October, excellent bay fishing for trout and redfish. Hurricane season runs through November — watch the forecast.
Quiet & mild
Mid-60s most days, occasional cold fronts. Whooping cranes are wintering at Aransas NWR. Great sheepshead fishing on the jetties. Some restaurants on reduced hours.
Practical Details
Beach Parking Permit
Required to park a vehicle on the beach. Sold at Lowe's Grocery (418 S Alister St) and most local convenience stores. Annual permits only — no short-term option.
Fishing License
Texas Saltwater License required for anglers 17+. Buy online from Texas Parks & Wildlife or at most local tackle shops. Some charters include it in the trip fee.
Ferry vs. Park Road 22
Two ways onto the island: the free TxDOT ferry from Aransas Pass (5-min crossing, runs 24/7, watch for summer waits), or the JFK Causeway / Park Road 22 from Corpus Christi onto the south end of Mustang Island, then 14 miles north into town. If the ferry line is long, swing around via Park Road 22.
Getting Around
A car is helpful for grocery runs and the south end of the island. Golf carts are popular in town and can be rented by the day or week.
Where to Stay
Beachfront condos line the Gulf side near the access roads. Cinnamon Shore and Palmilla Beach are master-planned resort communities with rentals and amenities. Old Town has historic cottages and walk-to-everything access. Vacation rentals fill up months ahead for SandFest, summer holidays, and the Deep Sea Roundup.
Weather & Safety
Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and intense sun — pack reef-safe sunscreen. June–November is hurricane season; watch the forecast on long trips.
